Fewer defects. Forgings are produced from the cleanest steels, minimizing non-metallic inclusions and retained gases which can cause brittleness to castings and plate.

Engineers will often specify forgings. The combination of strength, ductility, uniformity, dependability and cleanliness is unmatched by alternative products.
Grain size is finer and more uniform than castings or plate resulting in more predictable and uniform mechanical properties as well as higher yield strengths for any given hardness level.

No pattern or die costs. Forgings are produced close to final shape minimizing waste material. As material costs increase, open die forging is an economical alternative to the wasteful process of flame cutting.
